FTTC (fibre) broadband

How fast is it?

Advertised as up to 40Mbps. Most properties in Ash Vale should achieve 30Mbps or better.

Who can get it?

Many properties in Ash Vale can already get it, and the rest shouldn't have to wait more than a few months. To see if you can get it, go to PlusNet, click on 'Fibre optic arrives' and enter your phone number under 'See if you can get it'.

How much does it cost?

From £16.49 per month from our recommended supplier PlusNet.

Who supplies it?

Only a few ISPs currently offer FTTC. We use and recommend PlusNet because they combine excellent customer service with good value for money.

What equipment do I need?

A VDSL modem (which will be supplied and installed by an BT Openreach engineer) and a "cable" router (if you use our preferred supplier then PlusNet will supply this).

ADSL broadband

How fast is it?

Although it is advertised as "up to 8Mbps", speeds in Ash Vale are generally around 2Mbps because of the distance from the telephone exchange in Aldershot. In a few areas (e.g. near the Swan pub), speeds can be as low as 0.5 Mbps.

Who can get it?

Almost anyone with a BT phone line.

How much does it cost?

From £6.49 per month from our recommended supplier PlusNet.

Who can I get it from?

If your telephone service is supplied by a company that uses Local Loop Unbundling (e.g. TalkTalk), then you can only get it from that supplier unless you move your telephone service as well. Otherwise, you have a wide choice of suppliers. We recommend PlusNet because they combine excellent customer service with good value for money.

What equipment do I need?

An ADSL router. Most ADSL supplers (including our preferred supplier then PlusNet) will give you one free when you sign up. You will also need to filter all your telephone sockets. The easy way is to plug a microfilter into each socket (you normally get 2 supplied with an ADSL modem and you can buy more). The better way (if you want to get the best broadband speed and service quality) is to fit an ADSL faceplate to your master telephone socket - call us for details.
