Security tips: Using the internet safely!
- Never trust an email that appears to come from your bank, or Paypal,
or Microsoft, or some other well-known and reputable organisation. Email sender
addresses can easily be forged by viruses and scamsters. Be especially careful
if the email directs you to a web site which asks you to divulge sensitive information
such as your password, PIN number or credit card number – the email is probably from
someone who is trying to steal from you.
- Keep your copy of Windows up to date. This is most important. Many security holes
have been
found in Windows and some are serious enough to let your computer be infected
by a virus just by being connected to the Internet. To update Windows with the
latest patches, press Start and select Windows Update. Ignore any emails you
receive that pretend to contain patches from Microsoft – they are viruses.
