- Install an anti-virus program and keep the virus definitions up to date
using an online update service. Have a look at www.getnetwise.org/tools and www.grisoft.com.
- Be careful of free software. While there is much free
software available that is both useful and safe, there is also free software
that comes with a catch. The “catch” is sometimes a virus; more often it is “adware”
or “spyware” that tracks your web browsing and subjects you to pop-up advertising.
If you are experiencing this and you cannot remove the offending programs
(which is common because some of them resist removal), we can do this for you.
- Consider installing a personal firewall.
Windows XP has a built-in firewall, which you should turn on.
