- Never open an email attachment unless you are expecting it.
Just because it appears to come from someone you know doesn’t mean it is safe
– his/her computer might have a virus which is trying to spread
to your computer. Be especially cautious if the email subject line is vague or general.
Viruses have spread with email subject lines such as “Check this out”, “Your email”,
“Files you requested”, “Wicked screensaver, “Latest security patch”, and
“Message delivery failure”.
- Watch out for unexpected Internet activity, e.g. your computer trying to
dial-up to connect to the Internet when you didn’t ask it to, or
the lights on your modem flashing a lot when you are not trying to browse
or send/receive email. It could indicate a virus.
